Just a stones throw from Wild Camper Hire is the fantastic Highclere Castle which is one of England’s most beautiful Victorian Castles!

It is set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular parkland, the perfect picnic spot to take Alma Fox.
It is home of the worldwide television drama Downton Abbey and is a must see for any enthusiast. They have also created an Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars of the Castle to explore the legacy of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon; who excavated the infamous Tutankhamen.

It is the principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough, and the only non- royal non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title of a palace. The palace, one of England’s largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1722. It is renowned for its long association with the English and later the Royal Family, as well as for its architecture. There is a lot to see and do at Windsor Castle, so please allow enough time to make the most of your visit. We suggest between 2½ and 3 hours. Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe. Stonehenge is one of Alma fox’s favourite places to visit in Wiltshire, and incidentally its only 50mins from Wild Camper Hire!!

It is believed to have been constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC and is a real must see! Stonehenge’s ring of standing stones are the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze age monuments in England and it also includes several hundred burial mounds. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the UK and is regarded as a British cultural icon.

There are many spots nearby where Alma Fox loves to rest for the night so just ask at the Wild Camper Hire office for the best place to make your den! Stonehenge today is owned by the crown and managed by English Heritage; the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust, so remember to bring your membership cards.

Rollright Stones

The Rollright Stones

The Rollright Stones are a small road trip away in Alma Fox. These stones are a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monuments near the village of Long Compton, on the borders of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.

They are reputedly a monarch and his courtiers petrified by a witch! The Rollright Stones complex consists of three groups: the King’s Men stone circle; the Whispering Knights dolmen; and the single King Stone and they were erected at different times over a 2,000-year period, constructed from local oolitic limestone. The stretch of time during which the three monuments were erected bears witness to a continuous tradition of ritual behaviour on sacred ground, from the 4th to the 2nd millennium BCE.

Wild Camper Hire can suggest some great spots to rest Alma Fox for the night and let you know of other great sites to visit nearby!

Avebury Stone Circle

Avebury is 21.2 miles from Wild Camper Hire in Berkshire and is another of Alma Fox’s favourite places to visit. It is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire.

It is again one of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain and it contains the largest stone circle in Europe. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary pagans. Avebury is believed to have been constructed over several hundred years in the 3rd millennium BC, during the Neolithic or New Stone Age.

The monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. It has a good pub with parking in the middle, providing the perfect rest place for Alma Fox! The original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony.

During the Early Middle Ages, a village first began to be built around the monument, which eventually extended into it. Today Avebury is owned and managed by the National Trust, so don’t forget your membership!
